A common cooking oil may cause genetic changes in your brain

UC Riverside has issued research results that impact you. Your state of health may be being significantly altered by the flippant disregard of practices used in restaurants, fast-food chains, and the like.

Soybean oil “is by far the most widely produced and consumed edible oil in the U.S.,” per the US Department of Agriculture.

The truth of the matter: “It is not healthy for humans.”*

Soybean oil may induce the following:

  • Fatty liver
  • Diabetes
  • Insulin resistance
  • Obesity

Ingestion of soybean oil has notable effects on the hypothalamus.

The hypothalamus is “a structure deep in your brain” which “acts as your body’s smart control coordinating center.”*

It serves as the primary link between your nervous system and your endocrine system. It keeps “your body balanced in a stable state called homeostasis.”*

What does it manage?

  • Hunger
  • Thirst
  • Sex drive
  • Mood
  • Blood pressure
  • Sleep
  • Body temperature

It manages hormones, influences your autonomic nervous system.  There are many conditions which can impact / damage your hypothalamus, but soybean oil is a red flag.

UCR’s research team “discovered roughly 100 other genes also affected by … soybean oil.”* Ramifications may include*:

  • Energy metabolism
  • Proper brain function
  • Diseases (such as Parkinson’s disease and autism)

Proof is still needed to solidify the link to the above health conditions, UCR notes. “The research team has not yet isolated which chemicals in the oil are responsible for the changes they found in the hypothalamus.”*

Positive news is their research does not show the same concerns for “other soy products (tofu, soymilk, soy sauce etc.) or to vegetable oils.”*

What this research tells me?

We need companies to invest in our health and use healthier oils. More transparency is needed.

This is a vicious cycle:

-The unknown oils and other cooking practices that affect consumers

-The negative toll it takes on our health

-The increase in healthcare visits

-The heightened demand placed on healthcare facilities

-The inability to get access when we need it to improve our health

In my opinion, achieving a healthier body requires society as a whole (yes, from farmers to manufacturers to fast-casual food chains) to be on board and offer the best choices for us to live our best lives – part of that being longevity.

I hope you share this article on the dangers associated with this common cooking oil.  We need to bring more awareness to this oil that has the potential to cause us health problems.  If you have any questions that I can ask an expert, submit it here.
