Are calories or macronutrients more important?

In the dietary realm, there is constant buzz around the words calories and macronutrients (“macros”). It is commonplace for individuals to either be “tracking macros” or “counting calories.”

We all know what calories are and they are relatively easy to count. There are many caloric guides online to refer to.

I needed to know from an expert the 4-1-1 of macros.

Albert Abayev, RD, an expert with Cedars Sinai, provides all the facts we want to know about macros.

What are macros?

They are “just the big three nutrients your body uses for energy and building blocks: protein, carbs, and fats,” he said.

Are calories or macros more important?

“Calories matter, but macros tell your body what to do with those calories,” Abayev said. Counting macros are a bit more complex than counting calories. Depending on any specific health conditions you are dealing with, you may want to consult with a nutritionist to help you devise a plan.

What role do macronutrients play that calories don’t?

“They affect muscle, fat loss, energy, and hunger way more than calories alone,” he said.

To calculate macros, you must keep track of everything you eat and be honest with yourself about your daily activity level.

What is the #1 reason to understand and incorporate a macros “plan” into your lifestyle?

“Understanding macronutrients shows how food impacts not just your body, but your mind, energy, mood, and focus; all depend on the right balance,” he said.

The balance of macros depends on various individual factors.

As we know, but often need a reminder, our bodies are complex systems that need a balance of nutrition for all elements to function properly. It can be easy to over indulge in some foods and avoid others that have true value.

I get it – there are so many delicious foods and indulging in them can be tempting.

We want to do what we can, on an individual level, to improve our health. It is wise to bring in medical professionals to help us learn, navigate, treat, and improve the vital elements of our health.

Abayev’s advice is so helpful and should be actionable for all of us.

What do macros do that is so important?

“Macros guide your body on what to do with calories, protein builds muscle, carbs provide energy, and fats support hormones and lasting fuel,” he said.

There are several online macros calculators from trusted medical sources that can give you an idea of what that looks like based on your lifestyle, goals and what your body needs.

Carbs can range from 45%-65% of total daily calories; fat from 20%-35%; and protein from 10%-35%.

How long after incorporating a macros plan does it take to reap the rewards?

“If you stick with it, most people notice better energy, appetite, and body changes in 2–4 weeks,” he said.

That is tremendously fast in my opinion!  So many good improvements in such a short amount of time.  Truly a great motivator to feed your body with what it really needs.
