Better health through nutrition explained by Cleveland Clinic expert

The kickoff of a new year has us all eager to set goals in hopes of achieving them by year end. More often than not those goals include health and wellness … better food choices and exercise. We want to get to the ‘finish line’ and look back and be proud, healthy, and more educated than when we started.

The best place to start when looking to better our health is through nutrition.

So, how do we better our health through nutrition?

I asked an expert in the field of nutrition, Registered Dietician Beth Czerwony* of  Cleveland Clinic to share the simplest ways for us to achieve a healthier body.

“Our bodies do best when we are consistent, and the body knows what to expect,” Czerwony said.

What does that mean?

“Having consistent meals that include a variety of foods from all food groups, limited saturated fats and concentrated sugars, and intentionally have whatever movement you can do safely,” she said.

Which foods have the most saturated fats?

Foods high in saturated fats include: butter, ghee and lard; hard cheeses like cheddar; biscuits, cakes and pastries; fatty cuts of meat (including sausage), palm oil, coconut oil and coconut cream.

Which foods are loaded with concentrated sugar?

Think corn syrup, cane sugar, honey, agave to start.

Now that we have clarity on the concerning foods, let’s learn the healthy approach.

What does a healthy day of eating look like?

You want to fuel your body with foods that are nutrient-dense. That’s where the benefit lies.  Czerwony said adding in these items are advised:

  • Lean proteins (can include vegetarian and vegan options)
  • Whole grains for fiber
  • Adequate water

These are basic, positive changes that can be easily implemented that “will start the health journey,” she said.

I think we can all agree that the smallest, habitual, intentional changes can be the most long-lasting and impactful ones.

By following her suggestions wouldn’t you like to reap the success and confidence that will come from it?! I know I do!
