Dental hygiene 101

Your dental health is closely linked to your overall health and wellbeing.

What does a dental hygienist do?

Regular prevention assessment

  • Condition of the gums
  • Warning signs in the teeth (to get in front of major issues)
  • Provide tips and advice for best at-home oral practices
  • Screen for oral cancer (cheek lining, tongue, gums, surveying the roof of your mouth)

If you have sensitive gums and teeth and avoid the dentist for those reasons, know that there are special approaches some dentists offer.  Time to call around!

Do you know what the #1 cause is for tooth loss in adults?

  • Gum disease

It is “a silent problem,” said Dr. Clayton Cooke, DDS. “Gum disease can take control in the mouth quietly, with minimal signs and symptoms. It is a known fact in medical circles that people with gum disease run a higher risk of heart disease.”

Are you pregnant?

“Women who have periodontal disease and are pregnant are likely to give birth to lower-weight babies.”

Working hand-in-hand with your dentist through pregnancy is important!

In some cases a “strategic plan [can be created] that involves scaling the teeth and root planing services in order to reverse the progression of the disease, all while making sure the patient is comfortable during the process,” said Cooke.

No matter your age or the phase of life that you are in, regular dental visits are a pillar to good health.

Dr. Clayton Cooke, DDS is an accomplished and highly respected dentist in Southern California.
