Chiropractic care can be beneficial through all stages of life. In this interview, Dr. Mandi McCoy focuses on its benefits during pregnancy.
When asked the top 3 areas in a pregnant woman’s body that can find pain relief from chiropractic care, she stated:
- Lower back/pelvic region
- Anterior pelvis/pubic bone region
- Round ligament/abdominal region
As a practitioner, she first assesses the patient’s joints to see “if they are stiff or if they are actually moving too much, as this can happen with the increase in the hormone-relaxin during pregnancy.”
This is the hormone responsible for “causing the ligaments in our body to be more lax to help the pelvis open for birth.” So, all in all – while the discomfort can be noteworthy, in the long run it is beneficial for our body and baby.
After adjustment, patients are sent home with exercises and stretches to:
- aid in preparation for giving birth, and
- to help them stabilize the area in which they are experiencing discomfort/pain in and get well sooner
One of the biggest takeaways:
“Pregnancy does not have to mean that you are in pain.”
I love McCoy’s statement. Know that there are practitioners and treatment options out there to help you achieve a healthier body during any stage of life. Know that what may be a societal norm, commonplace in conversations, does not necessarily mean its true. Confer with experts.
It is all about staying proactive and partnering with practitioners who truly want to help you reach better health.
McCoy goes on to share what most of us hear regarding pain and pregnancy.
“Oh, well that is just a part of being pregnant.”
“That is normal to have pain while being pregnant.”
Sound familiar?
“Instead, I would say that while it is common to have pain while pregnant, it does not mean that it is normal,” Mc Coy said. “Pregnancy should be a beautiful time and chiropractic can help it be pain free!”
If you are pregnant and looking for a new avenue of pain relief — perhaps its time to seek out a qualified professional in the field of chiropractic care.
