What causes acid reflux in infants?

Have you considered chiropractic care for acid reflux? Dr. Mandi McCoy details helpful facts and advice:

Know that treatment varies and is dependent on age.

For the infant population, the focus is on:

#1 – Their latch

#2 – Mouth

“As these can trigger their reflux if they are unable to latch well or suck in a lot of air with eating,” McCoy said.

#3 – The mother’s diet

An assessment is key “if they are breast fed, or the formula type, if they are bottle fed.”

The most common allergens that a mother consumes that impact baby?

  • Dairy
  • Gluten
  • Soy

When an allergen is identified, McCoy suggests the mother “completely cut out the food group, typically dairy first, for at least two weeks to see if they notice a difference.”

#4 – Their diaphragm position

If it’s sitting too high, “it can trigger reflux.”

#5 – Their thoracic spine (mid-back region)

“As this is the area where nerves come out of the spine and go to the stomach, esophagus, etc.”

It’s important to know that “if they are inflamed or pinched, it can trigger reflux.”

Acid reflux is so common and worth finding the solution that works best for your family.

Dr. Mandi McCoy treats all ages, but specializes in treating the pregnant and pediatric population.
