Should you add seeds into your diet?

You’re trying to eat healthier but so many trends come across your screen you just don’t know which one is legitimate?

Let’s talk seeds.

There are so many seeds out there!

Should you add seeds into your diet?

What are the most common seeds?

Chia seeds (often used in overnight oats)

Flaxseeds

Hemp seeds

Pumpkin seeds

What are benefits of consuming seeds?

Chia seeds: “reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and aid in weight management” per Harvard Health.

Flaxseeds: are “full of soluble fiber – which helps you feel full for longer; reduces your risk of heart disease, and is a high-quality plant protein,” per Cleveland Clinic.

Hemp seeds: “contain all nine amino acids and support overall cardiovascular health,” per Cleveland Clinic.

Pumpkin seeds: “a quarter cup provides you with a third of your daily zinc requirement,” per Michigan State University.

What are the side effects of seeds?

Individuals may experience bloating, gas, and/or constipation if too many seeds are consumed without enough hydration.

Like anything, my motto is to ease into new daily rituals.

What do the experts say about seeds?

That seeds are a versatile pantry staple that can offer you proteins, fiber and healthy fats.

“Because flaxseeds are so nutrient-dense, I suggest not being concerned with the calories and fat, and the carbs are mainly from fiber, which isn’t digested or absorbed,” said Julia Zumpano of Cleveland Clinic.

What are the easiest ways to incorporate seeds into your daily routine?

  • In your baking
  • In smoothies or protein shakes
  • In oatmeal or puddings (overnight or hot)
  • Mixed into Greek yogurt
  • Sprinkled on a salad or veggie

Should you add seeds into your diet?

It depends on where you’re at. Could you benefit from more fiber, plant protein, and find the experts’ benefits applicable for your health and body?

Do you find a healthy, blended drink more satisfying and filling with hemp seeds mixed in?  What about with Greek yogurt and flaxseeds?

I sure do.

Do the benefits of seeds outweigh any negatives for you?

It’s your body and your decision.

Seeds are commonly referred to as “nutritional powerhouses” and an easy, dry good staple that can have many purposes in your kitchen.
